Ama, Laura and Kylie talk about the band's latest single "Strange Addiction" in antiMusic's "Singled Out" feature. Australian maximum rock n rollers Legs Electric's Ama Quinsee, Kylie Soanes and Laura McCormack tells us the story behind their brand new single "Strange Addiction". Here is the story:Ama: Sniffing dirty diapers, eating cigarette ashes, marrying a doll, chewing on glass? There was a time where I was glued to the TV watching episode after episode of the US series "My Strange Addiction." I was fascinated by the thrill that people got through these personal fixations, and was compelled to write about the subject. I wanted to capture that rush; you can hear it in the lyrics "the urge rising, tangled thoughts are getting higher" and how disconnected addicts can become to the world in "awareness my stranger." I also referenced the secrecy of having a strange addiction that you're hiding from the world in "silent feeding my hunger." We all have our "strange addictions," some more strange than others - and I shall be keeping mine under my belt! Kylie: Laura and I lived together at the time and we had just been to see ZZ Top play live and their driving sound heavily influenced us with this track. The opening riff that you hear is something we had been playing around with for a while; Laura had the guitar part and then I added the drumbeat. When we took the basic song idea to Ama she brought her lyrics titled Strange Addiction, inspired by watching the American TV series "My Strange Addiction." The song originally sounded a lot like ZZ-Top; or if you have seen the movie "Roadhouse" with Patrick Swayze - something that could have easily been in that movie. Maybe with a bit of guitarist Jeff Healey mixed in. The band took the song to (producer) Joel Quartermain and went through the pre-production process with him. He made a few adjustments to the song and brought in a few new ideas, some of which we incorporated into the song as we continued to work on it. I actually added that dance sounding part after Laura's solo, I thought it needed a pronounced bass drum and hi-hat along with a HUGE bass and guitar sound to bring it to the end chorus. When I play that I always feel like having a dance. It's one of my favourite songs to play live. Laura: I came up with the riff for "Strange Addiction" after seeing ZZ Top play at the Perth Motorplex in 2011. At this time I was also listening to a lot of Jeff Healey and blended the two influences together to come up with the song. I really wanted to write a song that made people dance, just like how everyone in the crowd feels when they see ZZ Top play. At the time, I lived with Kylie and I took the riff to her to lay down some drums. We then took the basic music to Ama she had some lyrics that fit and we both came up with the chorus. The chorus was later tweaked a bit by producer Joel Quartermain during pre-production. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself as you watch the video here and learn more about the group right here! Lots of exciting things in the works at the moment - unfortunately we can't talk about any of them just yet!! There are a couple different recording projects planned before the end of the year, including one that will be released as a very special limited edition collectible. We will also be playing a holiday/year-end show with some good friends of ours. Stay tuned for more info - coming very soon!! (All pics by Klowe Photography)
